How to specify a finished item and its component products

Link component products to a finished item. Set quantities, check costs and assign the assembly to locations.

Written by Jake Chapman

Use an assembly to specify a finished item made from separate parts. Each part is a component product with its own specification.

For example, a pendant can contain a shade, a flex and two bulbs. Specify each component with its own supplier and price, then link it to the pendant.

1. Link the component products

  1. Add the finished item to the product list. If it is already in the project, open its record.

  2. Open the product details and find Components.

  3. Select Add component products.

  4. Select a recent product, search for an existing project product, or add a new product.

  5. Enter the Unit Qty for each component.

Unit Qty is the quantity of that component needed for one assembly. Do not enter the project total in this field.

2. Check quantities and costs

Programa calculates the total component quantity by multiplying Unit Qty by the number of assemblies. For example:

The assembly cost comes from its components. Check the price and quantity of each component.

When you open a component from its assembly, its Financial tab shows the same Product pricing and shipping section as any other product. Enter the component’s unit prices and estimated shipping there. Below the pricing, Programa shows the quantity this assembly needs and what it costs. Client pricing is managed on the assembly.

To change a component’s quantity, select Edit in its Financial tab. Programa opens the assembly’s Components section, where you can change Unit Qty.

For costs, markup, shipping and totals, see How to price assemblies and component products.

3. Assign locations to the assembly

Assign the finished item to each room where you need it. Its components use the same locations automatically. Do not assign those components to the same locations again for this assembly.

A component can also be used in other assemblies or on its own:

  • In several assemblies: A veneer used in a pantry and an integrated fridge inherits the locations of both assemblies. Check the combined quantity.

  • As a standalone product: Laminate can be part of a console assembly and also be used on a kitchen island. Assign a separate Kitchen allocation for the island.

To see every use of a product in one place, open its Financial tab and select All uses. If you enter shipping for a product with several uses, Programa splits it across those uses based on quantity.

4. Show components in schedules and PDFs

Open Display options. Turn on Show assembly components to see the parts in your schedule.

Component rows show the assembly’s location. Standalone rows show the product’s own location.

Group headers show the product count. When you show components, the headers also show a separate component count.

Use the assembly-products filter to show finished items made from components.

For a PDF export, select Include component products. If you filter the PDF to one location, it uses the component quantities for that location.

Remove a component from an assembly

Unlink a component when you no longer need it in the assembly:

  1. Select the checkbox beside the component.

  2. Open Actions in the bottom bar.

  3. Select Unlink.

Unlinking keeps the product and its specifications in the project. The product returns to its standalone quantity. You can link it to the assembly again later.
